Longlists for CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals Announced

On Tuesday 4th February, longlists for both the CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals were revealed, the first time in the history of the UK's oldest and most prestigious children's book awards.

The 20 titles on each longlist are contenders for the highest accolades in children's literature, with past winners of the Medals including legendary authors Arthur Ransome and C.S Lewis and illustrators Quentin Blake and Shirley Hughes.

About the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal
The Kate Greenaway Medal was established in 1955, for distinguished illustration in a book for children. Named after the popular nineteenth century artist known for her beautiful children's illustrations and designs, the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal is awarded annually for an outstanding book in terms of illustration for children and young people.

The books longlisted for the 2014 CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal are:

  2. Open Very Carefully by Nicola O'Byrne (illustrator) and Nick Bromley (author) (Nosy Crow)
  3. The Paper Dolls by Rebecca Cobb (illustrator) and Julia Donaldson (author)(Macmillan Children's Books)
  4. Weasels by Elys Dolan (Nosy Crow)
  5. Puss Jekyll Cat Hyde by Jill Barton (illustrator) and Joyce Dunbar (author) (Frances Lincoln Children's Books)
  6. Time for Bed, Fred! by Yasmeen Ismail (Bloomsbury Children's Books)
  7. The Day the Crayons Quit by Oliver Jeffers (illustrator) and Drew Daywalt (author) (HarperCollins Children's Books)
  8. The Dark by Jon Klassen (illustrator) and Lemony Snicket (author) (Orchard Books)
  9. This is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen (Walker Books)
  10. Where My Wellies Take Me by Olivia Lomenech Gill (illustrator) and Clare and Michael Morpurgo (authors)(Templar)
  11. Mysterious Traveller by P. J Lynch (illustrator) and Mal Peet and Elspeth Graham (authors) (Walker Books)
  12. Mouse Bird Snake Wolf by David McKean (illustrator) and David Almond (author) (Walker Books)
  13. The Crocodile Who Didn't Like Water by Gemma Merino (Macmillan Children's Books)
  14. The Journey Home by Frann Preston-Gannon (Pavilion Children's Books)
  15. Abigail by Catherine Rayner (Little Tiger Press)
  16. The Lemur's Tale by Ophelia Redpath (Templar)
  17. Oliver by Birgitta Sif (Walker Books)
  18. Jemmy Button by Jennifer Uman and Valerio Vidali (illustrators) and Alix Barzelay (author) (Templar)
  19. Too Noisy! by Ed Vere (illustrator) and Malachy Doyle (author) (Walker Books)
  20. Sidney, Stella and the Moon by Emma Yarlett (Templar)
The shortlists for both the CILIP Carnegie Medal and the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal 2014 will be announced on Tuesday 18 March, with the winners being announced in June. The winners will each receive £500 worth of books to donate to their local library and a specially commissioned golden medal. Since 2000, the winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal has also been awarded the £5,000 Colin Mears Award cash prize.
