We're going Orange for Orangutans - Fri 17th Oct
We are supporting Chester Zoo and Act for Wildlife's 'Go Orange for Orangutans' fundraising event!
Orangutans are one of our closest relatives. We share OVER 96% of our DNA with them and, along with humans, they're the only great ape to live outside of Africa.
Known as the 'old man of the forest', they're also the only apes that spend almost their entire lives in the rainforest canopies of Sumatra and Borneo. Their treetop homes are some of the oldest on earth and had remained almost unchanged for the past 70 million years. However in the 21st century the demand for timber, palm oil, roads, agricultural land and space for mining means huge areas of the forest have now been lost, taking with it the homes of orangutans. With their numbers dwindling we're on the verge of losing this species FOREVER. Go Orange for Orangutans and help replant the rainforest to save our cousins in the wild.
Go Orange for Orangutans Day at the Nursery!
We are suggesting that your donate a pound and that your little one comes dressed in orange! You don't have to be completely orange but a hat, t-shirt, socks, dress would be fine.
100% of money raised will go to the charity.
For more information on 'Go Orange for Orangutans' visit: http://www.actforwildlife.org.uk/go-orange-for-orangutans/go-orange-for-orangutans#register

Help our hedgehogs this Autumn
Autumn is a busy time in the garden for wildlife, as hibernating creatures such as hedgehogs prepare for the winter months ahead. The People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) and British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) have together produced a free seasonal guide on how to make your autumn garden hedgehog-friendly.
In Britain, hedgehog populations have plummeted by a quarter in the last decade. Our once common garden friend is in serious trouble!
Help hedgehogs by taking part in Hedgehog Street and following the tips in the A-Z Guide to helping hedgehogs in Autumn.

Chester Zoo on TV - Wednesday 3rd September
First showing at 9pm on Wednesday 3 September, Our Zoo, is a six-part BBC drama following the inspiring story of Chester Zoo's founder George Mottershead and his family in the 1930s.
With incredible single-mindedness, George Mottershead drove himself and his family to realise his ambition to transform a ramshackle house on the outskirts of Chester into a unique visitor attraction that would change forever the way zoos kept animals.
The drama follows George’s inspiring and challenging journey as he moves his wife, two young daughters and parents - along with a monkey and a parrot - into a draughty old stately home. With a derelict plot of land, mounting debts, no resources or manpower and a concerted campaign from the local villagers to halt George's plans entirely.
It’s a race against time for the Mottersheads to build and open their zoo before the harsh winter sets in - or the bailiffs arrive.

G'day! - all about the land of Oz
Last week the classroom children spent the week learning about Australia.
They designed their own boomerangs, had Australian flag paint-on tattoos, listened to a didgeridoo but the highlight must have been the BBQ and bushtucker trial food!
Mealworm smoothie, Bug surprise, fish eyes and Witchetty grubs were all on the menu for the children to brave....
and here are the Queen and King of the Bushtucker trial!
This week they are learning all about China!

There was an old woman who lived in a shoe - Theatr Clwyd
There’s a problem with shoes. They keep getting mixed up. That man has a welly on one foot, and a fluffy slipper on the other. The woman over there is wearing a flip flop and a football boot. Some people don’t have any shoes at all! What’s going on? Has that woman who lives in a shoe got anything to do with this?

Farewell to Liz / ideas for new menu
This week we said a big thank you and farewell to Liz, our chef at the nursery, after 12 years!
Liz has semi-retired and is moving on to work part-time at The Marches School in Oswestry.
We have recruited a new chef who will be starting in a few weeks but in the meantime, it will be chef's Lynn and Sue in the kitchen preparing morning break and tea time meals!
Therefore we are reviewing our menu and we are looking for suggestions on what we can offer at break and tea time (4pm) so please pass on any ideas to the Nursery Office for consideration.

Children turn up to support JCB Marathon!
Esmor Davies will be driving his custom painted Welsh Dragon JCB over 2000 miles at a maximum speed of 28mph in order to raise money for the visually impaired. Some of the beneficiaries of his sponsored ride include the national charities Blind Veterans UK and Guide Dog Training School (which the classroom children are also supporting by collecting milk bottle tops).
The nursery children were thrilled to be able to get up so close to this special JCB and Esmor was kind enough to let them sit in the cab, and for some of the very brave children, even in the scoop!
He is hoping to raise over £100,000 so if you would like to donate to Esmor’s JCB Marathon please visit: https://www.justgiving.com/esmorsjcbmarathon/

We need your milk bottle tops!
The classroom children are supporting the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association by collecting milk bottle tops as part of fundraising.
Please could you bring washed milk bottle tops and put them in the container near the classroom door (past the clothes storage unit)?
If we can fill a black bin bag then hopefully we can have a visit from a guide dog and someone from the Association!
Thank you!

Preparing for school and other transitions
We have already said goodbye to some of our classroom children as they graduate from our nursery to Primary School.
At least 35 children will leave us by the end of August so to prepare them for their next big adventure we have been organising lots of school type activities such dressing up in the local school jumpers and uniforms, bringing a packed lunch in, having a water bottle and talking about school in books and display work.
We are planning a classroom group photograph which will be taken before the end of term and presented along with a book as a farewell gift.
What about the other rooms?
The Baby room's and Toddler room will also experience some changes because as space allows some of the older children in each room will spend time in the next room up so they can familiarise themselves with the staff and new room. The time spent on transition varies according to a child's need as we have found some prefer a longer transition time (couple of days over weeks) and others prefer a very quick one. Please do talk to the staff if you have any concerns.

Get read to 'Wow' us across the nursery
The Wow board is now ready to be used across the whole nursery so pick up your leaves and discuss with your little one what they would like to put on, bring them in and hang them up for us all to see!
Feedback from parents already using it has been great and the nursery staff use them to share within the rooms.
For more information on the Wow Board please see the previous posts at: http://www.peterpannursery.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Wow%20Board

Building work at the nursery
You may have noticed all the scaffolding around the nursery at the moment. This is because we are getting a new roof over the classroom and toddler area. Please take care when entering and exiting the nursery where there are fences.
We are also hoping the work on the outdoor area soon. The supplies have all been purchased so we are just awaiting the roof to be done and then a date for the work to commence on creating a roof over the decking area to create shade in summer and shelter in the wetter times!

Chicken pox information
There have been quite a few children affected by the chicken pox virus recently so we thought that we should signpost you to a high quality health resource with information on the signs, symptoms and treatment.
http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Chickenpox/Pages/Introduction.aspx
To prevent spreading the infection, please keep children off nursery until all the spots have crusted over, thank you.

We all love Mr Ginge!
Looking for Mr Ginge, the nursery cat, is one of the highlights of a entering the nursery for many of the children first thing in the morning. They love to stroke and make a fuss and he is very gentle and enjoys the attention.
We thought you might want to know a bit more about him:
His usual place is asleep either on the chair in the foyer (when it's hot) or in the nursery office, but he also has a bed in the summer house.
Mr Ginge adopted the nursery in 2012 following a dog attack where he was grabbed on the back. You may notice that he prefers being stroked on his head as a consequence of this. The vet's age guess would make him around four years old.
Apart from sleeping and attention he absolutely loves his Dreamie treats and chicken.

New noticeboard for parents
Have you noticed the colourful 'buzzing' noticeboard as you come into the nursery?
This is a new board for parents to help explain the 'characteristics of learning' that are used every day with the children. We know that you are often rushing through, but if you get chance please do take a look at the information.

Parent Support Meeting 18 June @ 7pm
You are all invited to come along to the next Nursery Parent Support Group meeting which will be held on Wednesday 18th June 2014 at 7.00pm at the nursery.
We discuss fundraising activities, how to spend the charitable funds, and discuss ideas put forward by parents and staff for improving the nursery over a nice cup of tea and coffee.
We are very keen for new members to join this time as the existing group will be losing some of its members (our Treasurer and Blog editor) as their nursery children move on to school in September, so please do let us know if you are interested even if you cannot make the next meeting.
We only meet four times a year for about an hour, and outside of the the meetings it is up to you how much time you want to commit from designing a poster, liaising with the nursery office team, adding an event onto our blog (no IT skills needed!), shopping for raffle items, taking notes at the meeting or just contributing to the discussion at the meeting. In addition to supporting the nursery, you can also use it for personal development perhaps to support a new role or job application, or just to try out something new!
If you are unable to come next week but have any feedback or suggestions please leave these with the nursery office staff for the group to discuss.
Look forward to hearing from you!

Hay Rack Farm - perfect for kids (and parents) after Cheshire Oaks shopping!
Have you ever braved Cheshire Oaks Shopping Village (near Ellesmere Port) with the kids, perhaps to get kitted out for bargain clothes or Clarks shoes from the outlet store and need somewhere to chill where the kids can play?
Well we've found a small farm just a few minutes drive from Cheshire Oaks that is perfect for them to have fun and for you to unwind after shopping!
Hay Rack Café and Farm can be found at Church Farm on the A5117 approximately a mile from Cheshire Oaks so only a few minutes drive back towards the motorway, over the roundabout , take the exit signposted Stanlow, past the posh car dealerships and follow the road until you see the sign on the right (opposite the Stanlow processing plant).
There's a farm shop, a tack shop, a café which does Kelly's ice cream, homemade cakes, sandwiches and hot food, cold/hot drinks. In a corner of the café is an area where children can paint ceramics (charges apply) or for a small entry charge of £1 per adult or child over the age of 2, you can go through the café to the outside area where there is a play area with climbing frames, slides and sit on tractors as well as lots of animals to see!
You can buy food at £1 a bag for a variety of animals including donkeys, goats, chickens, rabbits and ducks. At this time of year there are still some lambs which can be fed (supervised by staff) by the children using bottles of milk.
